About the Temple

In a quiet village near Kumbla, at the northern tip of Kerala, a small shrine stands in the middle of a still, spring-fed lake. This is the Ananthapura Lake Temple, often described as the only lake temple in Kerala. A short footbridge leads across the water to the sreekovil, where Vishnu is shown seated on the coils of the five-hooded serpent Anantha.

Many devotees hold that this is the moolasthanam – the original seat – of Sree Ananthapadmanabha, the Lord of the great temple in Thiruvananthapuram at the other end of the state. For years the temple was also known far beyond Kerala for Babiya, the gentle crocodile that lived in the lake and was believed to guard it. The setting is calm and green, and the temple is a peaceful stop for pilgrims and travellers alike.

History & Aithihyam

The story goes that the sage Divakara Muni Vilwamangalam once did penance here. A radiant little boy came to him and stayed by his side, but one day, when the sage lost his temper with him, the boy vanished, saying that the sage would find him again only in Ananthankadu, the forest of Anantha. Devotees believe the sage followed through a cave and came out in a wooded place near the sea, where the boy disappeared into an ilippa tree. The tree fell, and in its place lay Vishnu reclining on the serpent. That spot, the legend says, became Thiruvananthapuram.

Because of this story the lake temple is honoured as the first home of Ananthapadmanabha, and a cave opening at one corner of the lake is pointed out as the path the Lord took to the south. The similar names of the two places are often given as a sign of this bond.

The temple itself is old – it is commonly dated to around the 9th century. The sreekovil, the namaskara mandapam, the temple kitchen and a small shrine of Jaladurga all stand within the lake, which never runs dry thanks to a natural spring. The wooden ceilings of the mandapam are carved with the ten avatars of Vishnu. For a long time the idols were made not of stone or metal but of kadu-sharkara-yogam, a paste of more than seventy natural materials; in 1972 they were replaced with panchaloha idols, and there has since been effort to bring back the traditional form.

Babiya, the crocodile of the lake, became famous for living peacefully beside the shrine and for eating only the rice offering given to her by the temple. She died in October 2022 and was mourned by devotees. A new, smaller crocodile was reported in the lake from late 2023.
